Free Long Distance with Google Voice

February 4th 2010 in Gadgets, Mobile

Are you paying for Long Distance? What would you do if you could call Long Distance for free, any time, as much as you wanted?

I've written about Google Voice in the past, but I wanted to simplify the steps to use Google Voice to make free Long Distance calls for the common-day non-technical person.

You can call any phone number for free in the United States if you have a Google Voice account. What does a Google Voice account cost? Nothing, Google is giving away this service.

Here is how you can use Google Voice to call or fax any number in the United States:

Dial your Google Voice account phone number, enter your Google Voice PIN, dial option 2 to dial out to another number, and then dial the other number.

Let me break it down another way using my Google Voice account (209) 622-3344 to call the NIST Telephone Time-of-Day Service in Colorado at (303) 499-7111.

To do that, I would dial:
209-622-3344 (my Google Voice account phone number)
pause 2 seconds (pause can be "dialed" on my cells with a comma (,)).
1234 (dial my PIN, and no it is not really 1234)
2 (Dial option 2 to dial out to another number)
303-499-7111# (the NIST time phone number in Colorado followed by #).

It's just that simple. Google either picks up the bill or is somehow getting free calls themselves, and the cost to you is nothing.

So if you don't have a free Google Voice account, sign up for one today. Visit Google Voice and click the Request an invite link. It may take a week or so, but once you get an account, you'll be rid of Long Distance charges.
