How the Internet routes around a damaged HR policy

February 27th 2010

I was thinking this morning about a number of things.  Specifically, as to why places like LinkedIn are becoming more and more popular.

First, let me step back and explain something. There is an age-old saying, the Net interprets censorship as damage and routes around it originally made by John Gilmore in TIME magazine (6 December 1993). In Internet terms, 17 years might as well be a century.

Using the Stanislaus County Library Computer Resources

February 20th 2010

Modesto LibraryBravo! Good work, Stanislaus County Library technology folks. The free internet access and computer resources at the library are great.

Wyse 120 character terminalI recall going to the library five or so years ago and being frustrated at not having wifi wireless access for my laptop. Years back, I recall going to my local Manteca library (part of the Stockton-San Joaquin County Public Library system) and using the computer for catalog access on a dumb Wyse terminal with a monochrome-orange, text-only monitor.

Free, legal, professional music online

February 19th 2010

I love music.  I could easily spend $100-200 per month purchasing music.  But even more than that, I love music that I can share with others.

I don't spend that much, and I couldn't justify that, but I love adding songs to my personal library to play whenever I want. So I've been compiling lists of free songs that I've found online that I can share with you.

Photographs from around the world

February 15th 2010

Justin RoysdonMany of you many know of my brother, Justin, from me talking about him.  I'm very proud of him and his serving in the Navy.

The ship he is current assigned to, the USS Ingraham, was in American Somoa last October shortly after the tsumani had hit.  They were there to provide relief support, and my brother was able to use his photography skills.  Four of his photographs were selected to be used in the Navy's Surface Warfare print edition and can also be viewed in the PDF version as well.  One of those photographs was used for the headlining Winter 2010 feature online as well.

Free Long Distance with Google Voice

February 4th 2010

Are you paying for Long Distance? What would you do if you could call Long Distance for free, any time, as much as you wanted?

I've written about Google Voice in the past, but I wanted to simplify the steps to use Google Voice to make free Long Distance calls for the common-day non-technical person.

IT Geek Breakfast @ Huckleberry's, Modesto

February 2nd 2010

I wanted to invite everyone around Modesto to an "IT Geek Breakfast" at Huckleberry's this Saturday, Feb 6th, 8am. I've set up a Facebook Event to RSVP at.
If that link doesn't work, try searching Facebook Events for "IT Geek Breakfast".

Nothing formal, just a get-together breakfast of some Christians who
work in the IT/IS/computer field so we can fellowship.

Everyone (non-Christians friends too) are welcome, but the topics will
probably be highly geek/techno in nature, and probably boring for non-technical spouses.

HTML5 video tag, Ogg Theora & H.264

February 1st 2010

About a month ago I went to a family memorial for my Aunt that passed. We had a ton of pictures and videos that I collected from everyone's cameras and I consolidated and made into CDs before we all went back home.

However, I've a very large family on my mother's side (she's got 12 bothers and sisters), and more than half didn't make it to the memorial. I wanted to put it all online to send links to all the family.
