Calling All Artistic Folks - Logo Design Voting

April 1st 2009 in Networking

Some months ago I was blessed to meet a retired gentleman at church who helped another friend at church come up with some artwork for his business. He's come up with a number of logo ideas. I am not an artist and while I can tell what I don't like, I'm not sure how to get at what I think needs to be done to improve or fix what is wrong.

I'd like to hear from everyone as to their top 3 picks and suggestions for improvements for the Roysdon Networks logo. Please note that these are pencil sketches with some sample colors. Once I've decided what logo to go with, I'll have a professional graphics artist create it.

Imagine the text having "Roysdon Networks" underneath the logo or as part of the logo, depending on which design I go with, along with a one-sentence distilled description of the services offered. The services I offer are listed on my main page.

I'd actually like to have a second logo for products I'm developing having to do with TV recording systems (like DVRs). I think logo #6 fits this. However, I would like to come up with a way to make it such that if you saw either of the logos, you would know that it was a related to the same company, but yet unique. I'm not so concerned as to selecting this second logo as to the first logo, so I can order cards and letterhead and get moving on branding for Roysdon Networks.

I like almost all of 'em, but I particularly like #1, #2, and #7.

Now if only the three-pronged electrical plugs could be replaced by RJ-45 plugs. Unfortunately, RJ-45s will not be as recognizable in a logo.

For the secondary line of business, consider a "standard" TV screen shape (you know, like the rounded rectangle behind the "Tube" in YouTube) to serve as a dark background behind a white version of whichever logo you pick for the networking business. For example, if you picked logo #7, you could create an alternate version of it like this:
____________________
/ ____ \
| | \ |
| | __/ |
| | \ __ |
| | \____/__ |
| R O Y S D O N |
| tv solutions |
\____________________/

(This will make sense only in a monospaced font.)

Oops, my whitespacing got collapsed into an incomprehensible mess. You'll have to visualize... ;-)

Jason

It shows up fine in my email notification. Thanks, Mike.

I like numbers five and six designs. I like the R graphic on five, but I would make the Roysdon name smaller. I like the graphic on six, but with a different R in the middle and a different color for the graphic and no Roysdon at the bottom. Just the graphic with the R by itself.

Jason
number 2 is my total favorite ( not too busy and the color draws attention.

The top (3) picks for me would be #6, 5 and then number 4. Pretty exciting stuff picking a logo for you new company. Gods Blessings , Paul

Jason,

I like #2 & #7. When I scrolled down the page, these two logos just popped out at me. Very professional looking.

Hi Jason,

Nice range of concepts.

I'd go 3, 2, 6, 5 in order of preference and 'strength' of the mark.

One note though: the plug on the end of the cord doesn't say 'network' to me, it says power/utility company. A cat 5 plug would communicate that more clearly.

Jason,

I like # 2 the best,however, # 6 isn't to far behind :)

Jason,

Here are a few things to keep in mind when branding your company.

1. BRANDING IS EVERYTHING so be sure the brand (colors, logo, etc.)is effective and not necessarily what you think looks the best.
2. It should be something that looks good for all forms of media. From web to print. And sometimes print is in black and white. Minimal colors.
3. A good brand (logo) you could stitch on a hat. Like a pro baseball hat.
4. Also a good brand (Logo) you dont have to read but you know what it is just by seeing the silhouette.
ex: If your driving down the freeway and in the distance you see two golden arches but cant read the name or see the colors do you know what it is? Yes! McDonalds
How about a star? Carls Jr. Here's another, if you saw a swoosh without a name what logo does that represent? You got it Nike! So on and so forth you can think of thousands of successful business who use the same philosophy. Here's some others a blue triangle represents what? A Men's bathroom. Street signs, a stop sign you may not be able to see the color or read the sign but you know from the shape it is a stop sign and not a yield sign because those are a triangle. Again a good effective logo you know what or who the company is by the silhouette.

If it were my choice out of these I would say logo #2 is the best.

No. 2.

KISS.

Also remember it will need to look good in black and white.

Jason

Matt - I understand about the plug. The gentleman isn't high tech, but I'm not sure if I want to go with an RJ-45 end (CAT5), but most likely that's what I'd use.

Gerry

I like #2, #3, and #4 in that order.

I like having the globe because it easily ties into internet/networking service but #8 didn't do anything for me.

The first thing I noticed was the electrical plug too. It definately needs to go because it will give the impression that you are an electrical contractor.

Maybe a computer could be added to one of the logos with a cable connecting the computer to the world.

Erin Custer

Jason,
I love #2. I like the lettering in #6. I like the world and the old fashioned plug but the plug should be the beginning and a computer connect should be at the end. It would symbolize you taking them from the present to the future. That is what I would do. Number 2 with #6 lettering and two connects around the globe from old to new.
All the best.
E

I like #2 and #4. 2 is nice and simple with a good touch using the globe, and 4 is elegant with a crisp font.

Joel Franusic

6, 2, 1

Todd

I like number 2. Simple and easy to understand.

John Barcelos

I like #6 or #2. Just be sure you have some space to list some of the services you'll be offering. I agree with Matt about the CAT 5 cable.

Ben

I like #6. Looks cool and good visual energy in mark and font. Also feel the power plug element is a little confusing and maybe dated. Perhaps if the lines in the other options didn't end with a plug but rather some representation of electricity or data bits might make more sense. But definitley prefer numero 6!

Dave Miller

I like 6, but I think 4 is very good. I might change the electrical plug to an RJ45 end.

Don (Dad) Roysdon

Hi Jason,
I like Roysdon logo #5-v1, Roysdon logo #7-v1 and Roysdon logo #9-v1 designs. I like the Roysdon name (font style) of 5 to also be used for 7. 7 and 5 could be used to be the Roysdon Networks and TV recording systems logos.

Love,
Dad

Justin Roysdon

I like the Roysdon lettering from #5. The logo on #7 is my favorite. I agree that the power plug doesn't fit for a networking company. A CAT 5 or phone plug would be better. How about some type of wireless symbol... microwave, ect.

Kevin

#2 is straight forward and easy to read. It is very nice without being too busy.

Ernie Roysdon

I like #2 the contrast is much better.

Alan Strawinski

Of these, #6 would be my first pick, followed by #3. The 110 plug just isn't doing it for me. Not really sure that I'd change it to CAT 5, either.

No cables dangling anywhere. Keep it clean and simple, I say. :D

Conficker [?] is set to start its new "upgrade" right now, starting in the GMT timezone and rolling around the world as April 1st starts. All infected PCs with Conficker will attempt to get new instructions, and depending on how well crafted they are, it's said this may be the worst network security incident - ever...

There are plenty of legitimate reasons to use encryption for emails. Some reasons for using encryption is with overseas communications to relatives or business partners, or even local communication but of a highly sensitive or confidential nature, such as network configuration files, Visio network diagrams, system passwords, etc. Perhaps you want to email your paystub PDF from your work email to your personal email, that'd be the perfect candidate for encryption.
